We became poets and illustrators during our first week of school, combining Science and Language Arts curriculum requirements in this writing assignment. We described summer associations using our five senses, wrote poetry practicing the writing process, and used our classroom computers to prepare our final copies. Our illustrations were done with colored pencils- very grown up this year!

Summer Is...
Summer is yellow
It tastes like hamburgers fresh from the grill
It smells like blueberry pie
Summer reminds me of kids playing
And sounds like cries of happiness from kids
Summer feels like a world of smiles

Summer Is...
Summer is light yellow
It tastes like green apples
It smells like spicy peaches
Summer reminds me of hummingbirds
And sounds like thunder
Summer feels dry

Summer Is...
Summer is violet-red
It tastes like yellow lemonade
It smells like saltwater ocean
Summer reminds me of people tanning on the beaches
And sounds like deer and fawns eating the grass
Summer feels like humid weather

Summer Is...
Summer is purple
It tastes like cinnamon candy canes
It smells like pizza dough
Summer reminds me of apples and oranges
And sounds like the wind swishing
Summer feels like fall is coming

Summer Is...
Summer is dark red
It tastes like seedless watermelon
It smells like pine trees
Summer reminds me of monarch butterflies
And sounds like the sound of early birds waking me up
