Where In The World Is Milford?
Geography can be an abstract concept for young children. We combined Language Arts, Social Studies, and Science skills in this project, in an effort to make geography a bit more real. We located a town in another state that shares the same name as the one we live near, and wrote friendly letters to a third grade class located in that Milford. We included information about our Milford and our state from our research on the Internet, and prepared our letters using word processing software available on our classroom computers.  This was a very exciting project for our class! We have included the letters we sent and replies we received below.

Dear third grade class,
My name is Aaron. I am 9 years old. I have a little sister. I have four cats. My cat is named Pikachu. My sister's cat is named Nolah. My mom and dad's cat is named Oliver. The family cat is Lilly. Our neighbor's cat, Princess comes over to our house too. I like to play N64, Gameboy Color, and Gameboy Advance. My favorite N64 games are, Star Fox, POKe'MON Stadium2, and POKe'MON Puzzle League. My favorite television shows to watch are Ed, Edd n' Eddy, Dexters Lab, and POKe'MON. I am writing to you because you have a town called Milford near you and we have a town near us called Milford.
The Milford that I go to has a church that I like to go to. Our priest Father Mullaly is very nice. Milford has a doctor's office which I always go to when I get sick. Also, Milford has a famous place where I went to go on my Cub Scout trip. The building used to belong to the James Pinchot family. The James Pinchot family was very rich. They also ate food outside and passed food across the water in bowls. There is a Kmart, Grand Union, and McDonalds, which I like to go to.
Pennsylvania has a little place called Arnold's that has a store that I like because I get cats and dogs action figures. And when I get one, there's always something good to eat inside! If you get a cat you get a fish candy.  If you get a dog you get a bone candy. Our state capital is Harrisburg. Pennsylvania was named after William Penn. The year Pennsylvania became a member of the USA is 1787. What is your state capital's name? Hope you write back!

                                                            From,
                                                            Aaron

Mrs. Sroka's Third Grade
Milford, Michigan

Dear Aaron,
Our class was happy to get your letter. We decided that everyone would write back to you.
Our school is located in Milford. Milford is a small town about 40 miles from Detroit. Many of our parents work outside of our community. We have 11 elementary schools, 4 middle schools, and 2 high schools in the Huron Valley School District. We have over 11,000 students who attend school in this district.
There are over 400 students at Kurtz. We have K-5 students. Our day begins at 9:15 and ends at 3:55. We have one 20-minute recess after lunch each day. We have 29 students in our class. Almost all of our students ride a bus to school. Our class is on a year round calendar. That means that we go to school all year round. We start in Aug., have 2 weeks off in Nov., 1 or 2 weeks off in Dec., 2 weeks off in Feb., and 3 weeks off in May and June. We go back to school in the middle of June and are off again at the end of July. We love it because students do not forget everything over a long summer break.
Milford has many churches, doctors, dentists, shops, and restaurants. We are building a new YMCA and a new library. We have lots of trees and water. We are near the Huron River and many students live on lakes. It is a great place to live.
I hope you learn about many other Milfords. I have given your web site address to my class. I hope they will be able to visit. Good luck in your research.
                                                                                          Sincerely,
                                                                                          Mrs. Ellen Sroka

Miss Dellaera's Third Grade
Milford, Connecticut
May 28, 2003

Dear Keegan,
We were so excited to receive your letter. We hope you haven't waited too long for us to answer you.
Our school is named after Simon Lake who invented the submarine. The submarine is the logo of our school and it is on our homework notebook, school stationary, and on school t-shirts and hats. Our school has a music room, cafeteria-gym, library, and computer lab. Each day we have a special, except we have music 2 times a week. In the computer lab we type stories and do research. In our school we have 1 preschool, 4 kindergartens, 3 first grades, 3 second grades, 4 third grades, and 3 each of 4th and 5th grade. There are about 400 students and 35 teachers in our school. We only have 3 vans and 4 buses. Some of us walk home. From our school we can walk to the beach, because we are only 5 minutes away. The beaches are very close.
Our teacher's name is Miss Dellaera. Miss Dellaera is an awesome teacher! She is our school's Teacher of the Year. There are 14 children in our class. There are 6 girls and 8 boys. Our desks are in a square formation. Every day we get "I'm Proud of You" tickets for good work, good behavior, great ideas, or for being kind or respectful to each other. We write our name on the tickets and put them in a special box. On Friday the teacher pulls out 4 tickets and those kids get to pick a prize from the treasure box.
We are growing Brassica fast plants. Now we are pollinating the flowers. We glued dead bees to toothpicks and every day we rub the bees on the flowers to get pollen and cross pollinate the flowers. At first we thought it was disgusting but it's a lot of fun. We are studying the life cycle of our plants. We are also learning cursive. It is fun, but not everybody wants to do their work in cursive.
We went on many field trips this year. We went to the Indian museum in Washington, Connecticut and to the symphony in New Haven. We also went to the Milford Historical Society and saw the houses from the 1700s and the 1800s. The guides were dressed like people from that time and told us how people lived back then. This week we went to the Health Fair. We learned how to keep our bodies healthy and safe. The firemen in the helmet and mask were cool. We saw x-rays of broken bones and a heart. There were 2 lungs in a dish. One was red and one was black from smoking. It was gross.
Thomas Tibbals discovered Milford in 1637. He was a settler from New Haven. The first settlement was built around a mill on the Wegawaug River. The white settlers traded 24 knives, 12 hoes, 12 hatchets, 12 small mirrors, 10 blankets, 6 coats, and 1 kettle. Then the Indians gave them a piece of land. Now it is our town.
Milford is in the southwest part of Connecticut. It is located on Long Island Sound. Milford has the longest coastline in the state and also the most beaches in Connecticut. Many people say Milford is a small city with a big heart. It has about 60,000 people. There are 6 elementary schools, 3 middle schools, and 2 high schools. Milford is a beautiful city that is a suburb of New Haven. If you drive to New York City it is about 1 hour away.
Connecticut is called the "Constitution State". That is written on our license plates. New York, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island are Connecticut's neighbors.
We get out of school on June 20th. We hope you liked learning about our school and our town. Have a nice summer.
                                                                                                    Sincerely,
                                                                                                    Miss Dellaera's class
