The Amazing Me! Art & Writing Contest allowed us to draw a self-portrait and write about ourselves using a variety of paragraph prompts provided by the contest sponsor. The seven-paragraph narrative essay was one of the longest pieces of writing some of our class had ever done. We thought it was pretty amazing that we could all write such a long and detailed piece!           We collaborated with our Art teacher, continued to practice writing process skills, gained more experience with our classroom computers, and wrote for an authentic audience. Pennsylvania State Standards continued to be met with this project as well. Enjoy our amazing contest entries!

Kirsten                                                                                    November 10, 2003 Age: 9 Amazing Me           One of my favorite things to do is go swimming in the summer because when it is hot out you jump in the pool because it cools you off. Also my favorite thing to do is go to amusement parks because they have rides and roller coasters. The foods I love are pizza and calzones. They're my favorite foods because they both have some crust on them. My favorite TV shows are Full House and Lizzie McGuire. Those are my favorite shows because they're on late and also because my mom lets me stay up and watch them. My favorite books are Black Lagoon books and other books. Those are my favorite books because they are very funny. I also like them because the pictures are hysterical. My favorite place to visit is Disney World because there are lots of rides there. Also my favorite place to visit is the zoo because they have lots of cute animals there.           My favorite people are my grandmas because they love me a lot and because they get me a lot of stuff for Christmas. My mom and dad are my favorite people because they take care of me, they give me food, and buy me clothes. Another of my favorite people is my sister because she always thinks about me and also because when my mom gets my sister something my sister says,  "What about Kirsten?" My cousins are my favorite people because they are nice to me and they bring me places with them.           Some of my favorite qualities about me are being funny to people because they like when I act funny. I am always friendly to people because they are nice to me too. Also I am friendly because my mom tells me to. I am a hard worker all the time because I want to get it right.           If I could change something about myself I would change myself into a two year old again because I wouldn't have to pick out my clothes in the morning. And I wouldn't have to do my hair by myself. Also I would like to drive at nine years old because I could drive myself to school.           If I could change something about the world I would change the trees into candy trees because you could eat candy 24 hours a day.  It might even have bubble gum on it! That's my favorite gum.           One amazing thing I did was go on the Hawk at Disney World. When I went on it went upside down and at the end steam from the water splashed my mom, and dad, and me.           One amazing thing I would like to do in my life is to go whale watching. I would like to do that because it would be my first time seeing a whale in the ocean. And, you could maybe touch them and maybe feed them too.

Ryan                                                                                       November 10, 2003 Age: 8 Amazing Me           My name is Ryan. I like to ride my bike because I know how to go over jumps and I like to go to Hershey Park because I like the Falcon. My favorite food is brownies because when my mom makes them they taste very good. My favorite place to visit is my grandma Joyce's house because she lives on a beach near the bay side of the ocean.           My favorite people are my mom because she helps me solve problems, my dad because he helped me ride my bike, my papa because he helps me build things, and my grandma because she plays games with me. My grandma Joyce is one of my favorites because she plays with me. My grandpa Micky is one of my favorites because he plays Frisbee with me.           My favorite qualities are that I am a hard worker because I help people and I am friendly because I care for my little sisters and for other people.           If I could change something about myself I would change what I play with because I am too old to play with Power Rangers now.           If I could change something about the world I would make sure nobody would litter anywhere because it pollutes the place.           The one amazing thing I did is when I learned how to ride a bike because I fell down so many times and then I could ride it.           I would like to meet Tony Hawk because I really like to watch him on TV and I would like to get his autograph someday.

Emily                                                                                     November 12, 2003 Age: 9 Amazing Me           One of my favorite things to do is read.  My favorite books are Little House books.  My favorite one is The Long Winter. I like it because two people stop the town from starving. I have the whole collection of Little House books. My favorite place to go is to my aunt's house. I like it there because there is a stream and we have fun. We also have water fights! After that we take nice warm baths.           My favorite people are my mom, my dad, my brother, and the rest of my family. I also like my friends. I have a lot of friends! All of my family and friends are nice. One of my friends is Audrey. She's nice and that's why she's my friend!            My favorite qualities about myself are I'm nice, I'm a hard worker, and I'm smart. At least that's what my family and friends tells me. One of my most favorite qualities about myself is I believe in myself. I believe in myself so I can do a lot of things! You can do it too.           If I can change something about myself it would be my hair. I would make my hair curly or wavy. I have glasses and think I look better with curly hair with and without glasses. Every night when I take a shower I braid my hair so it will be curly.           If I could change something about the world it would be to lower the taxes and prices of everything! It is way too expensive.           One amazing thing that happened to me was when I was on Mrs. Dingman's web site and I went to Math Links. I had one minute to get as many addition problems right. I got thirty-two right!           I would like to go to the mall every day. I would win the lottery, then go to the mall. There is one reason why I want to go. I love shopping and I love to buy things! I would buy a laptop, shoes, and clothing of course! I love to go on the computer, so I hope the mall has cordless laptops! I'm saving up for a laptop. So far I have about three-hundred dollars! That's a real lot!

Nicholas                                                                                 November 10, 2003 Age: 9 Amazing Me           I like Classical and Rock music. Classical is fast sometimes, other times slow and soft. But I also like Rock because it is hard and loud. I like Boston because it has a lot of places to go and historic things. I like wwwHistoryChannel.com because you can search anything anytime.           My favorite people are my grandpa and my other grandpa. My first grandpa helps me with things. My other grandpa knows about machines and things. I like asking both about things they have seen like cars, stores and gizmos.  Because my first grandpa was in the time of the fifties I like cars and stuff from that period. My second grandpa was in the forties and I like the things there also.           I am smart is one of my qualities. I can take something apart and put it back together. Also I am a magician. I can make a coin disappear and reappear in a different condition like a new nickel to an old nickel in a few moments.        I want my own TV and Direct TV on it, because my brother watches his shows when I watch his shows anyway. Also I want to run faster.           I would want streets of gold to appear and for everybody to have the same amount of money. I would also like to make the world to have no pollution and every place to be clean.           I went to the U.S.S Constitution and the Navy people were funny. It is the longest serving military ship in the world. An officer talked to us about the ship. He called me a powder monkey, which is an eight year old or if you cannot be a soldier. A powder monkey is someone who delivers powder to cannonries. Also he said I was a tall eight year old.           I would want to see a ghost, alien, Bigfoot or the Loch Ness monster, because I would want to say I have seen something not normal.

Audrey                                                                                   November 10, 2003 Age: 8 Amazing Me           My name is Audrey and I like to do a lot of things. I love to sing. I like to sing because I like music. I like music because in my opinion I'm good at it. I also like to read. I like to read because for me reading is fun! I like to cheerlead. I like to cheerlead because it's fun and it's good exercise.  My favorite kinds of foods are my mom's cooking and Chinese food. I like to eat them because they are delicious. Some of the places I like to visit are France, Florida, California, Atlanta, Maryland, and Africa. I like to visit Florida and California because they are fun places to visit. I like to visit Atlanta, France, Maryland, and Africa because my family members live in those places. My favorite kind of music is Pop and Punk Rock. I like that kind of music because it is really fun to listen to. My favorite kinds of books are mysteries, adventures, and The American Girl Collections. I like to read those kinds of books because they are interesting.           One of my favorite people is Emily, my best friend. What I like best about her is she is nice, sweet, and generous. Another person I like is Kimberly, my other best friend. What I like best about her is she is funny, nice, and sweet. Another person I like is Camden. What I like the best about her is she is sweet, kind, and nice. More people I like are my family of course! I like them because they take care of me, they love me, and they're kind to me. I also like my friends. I can't name all of them.           Some of my favorite qualities about myself are I'm friendly, nice, funny, generous, caring, kind, a hard worker, love music, not mean, not selfish, never give up, do well in school, smart, and I have a good heart. Those are my favorite qualities because if I weren't friendly I wouldn't have too many friends and I like to be nice. I like to be caring and funny and being generous is good, so is being kind. It's good to work hard and I love music. If I were mean I wouldn't have many friends. I like all of those qualities I wrote because for me they are good qualities.           If I could change something about myself I would change the length of my hair. Even though my hair looks long it's only 3 inches below my shoulders. The reason my hair looks long is that I have extensions. The reason I want to change that is I think I would look better with longer hair. Even though I like myself the way I am, I still want to change that.            I would change that if you litter you go to jail with one warning before you go. Another thing I would change is if I were the president I would make all the poor have houses, food, and money for free. I would change littering because I want more people to keep their country beautiful. I would like to change the poor because a lot of people don't have food or money.           One amazing thing I did in my life is I wrote this story. That is an amazing thing because this is 7 paragraphs. I did it right now.           One amazing thing I would like to do in my life is that I want to be the first woman president. I would like to be first woman president because a lot of women tried but they didn't make it. I know if I believe I will be the first woman to be president, I will be! I will also let me family move in with me and I will change a lot of things. For me that's really amazing!

Gia                                                                                         November 12, 2003 Age: 8 Amazing Me           My favorite things to do are to ride my bike and to hang out with my friends because I like to do all of that. My favorite TV show is Full House and My Life as a Teenage Robot because they are funny. My favorite web site is DisneyChannel.com because there are lots of great games I like to play. I most definitely like Alien Ant Farm because my sister got me into that music and my book is Santa Paws and the New Puppy.           Some of my favorite people are my mom, my dad, my brother, and sister. They are my favorite people because I love them and because they love me too.  Some more of my favorites are my Aunt Margaret and Uncle Kenny because I love them too! And I love my Pop-Pop and Rose.           Some of my qualities I have are being caring, VERY smart, and I like to draw people. All of these things are my qualities because I like to help people and do all those things. Some more are being loving too!           If I could change anything about myself it would my personality and how good I am in school! I would do this because I probably could be a better person ALL the time and around people.           If I could change anything about the world it will be to have world peace and stop war because it would make the world a better place to live.           One amazing thing that happened in my life was when I was a baby and I was born because that is when I could actually have something amazing to do!           I would like to do photography and be an artist and journalist too! I think this would be a great job!

Joey E.                                                                                   November 12, 2003 Age: 8 Amazing Me           My favorite things to do are roller blade, ride my bike, and go to my grandma's house and walk around the lake. I like to go there because we can have fun just by talking to each other. My favorite movie is Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. My favorite food is Fettuccine Alfredo.           My favorite people are my dad, my mom, my aunts, my grandparents, and my cousin Brittany. They are my favorites because they are very close to me.           My favorite qualities about myself are I'm funny, I'm a hard worker, I'm a good football player, I'm a great skier, and I'm a good listener. I like those qualities because I like to do them.           If I could change one thing about myself it would be to be able to run really fast because I would join track.           If I could change one thing about the world it would be to turn it 23 million years ago. I would like to do that because I want to see the dinosaurs!       Once I was riding my scooter and I flipped over the handlebars and landed on my face. I never used it since then because I got road-rash on my tongue, my forehead, my chin, and on my nose.           I would like to climb Mt. Everest because I want to set a record for my family.

Victoria                                                                               November 10, 2003 Age: 8 Amazing Me           Some of my favorite things to do are ride my bike and draw. I like to do these things because I show my sister how to do them. Some of my favorite foods to eat are beans, rice, and chicken. I like these things because they're very sweet. Places I like to visit are Santo Domingo and New Jersey. I like those places because my grandma lives in Santo Domingo and I used to live in New Jersey. My favorite music is church music because I love God. My favorite book is My Dog named Baby because it's about dogs. My favorite TV show is Yakkity Yak. Some of my favorite movies are Heidi and Snoopy. I like them because Heidi is a sad movie and Snoopy is a dancing movie. My favorite web site is www.Barbie.com because it's about Barbies.           Some of my favorite people are my grandma and my friend A.J. I like my grandma because she loves me and cares about me. She also gives me toys. I like A.J because we go to each other's houses for Bible study and we like to play together and he has a lot of board games.           Some of my favorite qualities about myself are I am funny because I always make people laugh. Another quality I like is I am kind because I like to make people happy. Another quality I like about myself is I am adventurous because I like to travel.           If I could change something about myself it would be my bad grades in math because I don't do well in math and I don't like it too much.           If I could change anything in the world it would be that everybody would not take drugs. I would change that because some people die of drugs.           One amazing thing I have done in my life is when I first knew how to read, do art and spelling. I chose these because they're my special talents.           One amazing thing I would like to do is to go on adventures in forests and jungles. I would like to do this because I want to learn about animals and there are different animals I want to meet.
